Peanut Butter on Keto: What to Look For and What to Avoid

8 min read Keto Low Carb Fat and Protein

Peanut butter is one of the most searched foods in the keto community. It is naturally high in fat, moderate in protein and relatively low in carbs. However, commercial peanut butter can knock you out of ketosis faster than you think. Here is how to choose wisely.

The Macro Case for Peanut Butter on Keto

Natural peanut butter is approximately 50% fat, 25% to 30% protein and around 20% carbohydrate. Keto diets typically limit daily carbohydrate intake to between 20g and 50g. Two tablespoons of natural peanut butter contain approximately 6–7g of carbs, with a net carb count of around 4g after fibre. This makes it genuinely keto compatible, provided no unnecessary ingredients are added.

Why Erythritol Does Not Affect Ketosis

A systematic review published in Current Developments in Nutrition (2025) analysed 15 human intervention studies. Researchers found that erythritol reduced insulin response and blood glucose concentrations compared to glucose. With a glycemic index of zero and an insulinemic index of only 2, erythritol does not trigger the metabolic response that interrupts ketosis. This makes it one of the preferred sweeteners for serious ketogenic diets.

The Sugar Problem on Keto

Commercial peanut butters often contain 3–6 grams of sugar per serving. For people following strict keto, this sugar accumulates quickly. Some labels may claim "No Added Sugar" while still containing corn syrup solids, maltodextrin or dextrose. Always read the ingredient list carefully, not just the front of the package.

Fat Quality on Keto Matters

Natural peanut oil is rich in oleic acid, a heart-friendly monounsaturated fat. Many commercial brands add hydrogenated oils, introducing saturated and trans fats. Since fat provides the majority of calories in a ketogenic diet, fat quality matters just as much as quantity. The best keto peanut butter contains only the natural fats present in peanuts.
